The Paul L. Kelley Volunteer Academy Education Resource Center will provide a safe, nurturing environment for the students of Knox County to learn, grow and advance both socially and academically through individualized educational programs, career initiatives and community partnerships.About the School:
The Paul L. Kelley Volunteer Academy is named after Dr. Paul L. Kelley, a long-time educator, administrator, School Board member, and advocate for children in the Knox County Schools. Dr. Kelley is universally respected and widely revered, and is a tireless champion in his support of young people. “Volunteer Academy” was a name suggested by the students. Its significance is that it ties to our region in the Volunteer State, reflects that all students are focused on success by purposeful choice, and speaks to the rigor and high expectation of the school.
Kelley Volunteer Academy is acredited by AdvancEd through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. The 6,400 square feet facility housed within Knoxville Center Mall is a Simon Youth Academy and serves approximately 200 students during the course of a day. Students represent all other 13 high schools within Knox County. Kelley Academy serves 11th and 12th grade students.
Starting fall term 2013 we will have 7 periods each day. Prior to 1st period, students will have an intensive assistance program. This program begins at 8:30 and from that point on each period will begin on the hour. Students are required to attend at least 4 academic classes each day. Student schedules will be created based on their needs.
There is a wireless network throughtout the building that provides access to the Internet for 86 student desktop computers. Each classroom is equipped with a Smartboard and projector. The student lounge is outfitted with computers, a Smartboard and projector, and printer for student use.
For enrollment information and eligibility, students and parents should contact the school counselor at the student's base school.
